Great Skincare is the Foundation of Every Summer Beauty Routine

No matter the season, a great skincare routine is a must. In the summer months, use a gentle cleanser and exfoliate regularly to get rid of any dead skin and build-up. The sun can dry out the skin, so make sure to use a light moisturizer – and drink plenty of water – to keep things hydrated.
When your skin has seen a bit too much sun, be extra gentle with it. Rinse the area with cool water and apply aloe vera to soothe the burn and help it heal.

Pile on the SPF….

Too much sun exposure can wreak havoc on the skin. In the short term, you may experience sunburn or dryness. Over time, overexposure can result in early aging of the skin, causing wrinkles, sun spots, and other issues. It also raises your risk of skin cancer.

To prevent sun damage, make protection a part of your everyday routine. Choose a moisturizer with SPF to shield your skin from the sun’s harsh rays at the base layer. Many products – from foundations to highlighters – pull double duty with built-in sun protection.

When you’re going to be outside, be sure to also apply sunscreen to all parts of your body that are exposed. Reapply regularly to keep the sun’s rays at bay.

…Or Throw Some Shade (Literally)

A wide-brimmed hat is a stylish and smart way to protect your skin from the sun’s harsh rays. Look for something tightly woven, as ats made of fabric are often better than straw, which tends to let light through.

You may not get the tan of your dreams, but you just might keep the healthy glow of skin that’s not damaged by the sun. Still set on getting that sun-kissed look? Try a bronzer, not the sun.

Go Bare…

Summer is the perfect time to keep things ultra-simple. Ditch your whole makeup routine and step out with a fresh, natural face. Going bare gives your skin room to breathe, and you won’t have to worry about sweat affecting your look.

…Or Keep Your Makeup Light

Sometimes a fresh face isn’t possible or preferred. So when you do decide to go for a full face, just keep your layers light. Makeup brand L’Oreal Paris suggests applying a primer under a lightweight foundation for secure coverage. You could even tackle both steps in one with a BB cream.
Cream blushes are your friend in the hotter months, as they blend easily with your foundation for a natural dewy glow. Set it with a light matte powder, but apply sparingly – too much can quickly turn cakey. Finish it off with a bright eyeshadow, a swipe of mascara, and a pop of color on your lips.
Pro tip? Avoid anything that shimmers. A bit of shine is inevitable in the summer, but you don’t want to add to the effect.
